FORMAL DISCIPLINARY ACTION TAKEN BY THE NEVADA STATE BOARD OF MEDICAL EXAMINERS: ******************************************************************** JUNE 23, 1999 The Investigative Committee of the Nevada State Board of Medical Examiners filed a formal complaint against Dr. Handsfield alleging that he is unable to practice medicine with reasonable skill and safety because of mental or physical illness, or the use of alcohol, drugs, narcotics or any other substance. Copies; Complaint w/ Exhibits 6 pages ********************************************************************* OCTOBER 6, 1999 Dr. Handsfield entered into a Stipulation for Settlement with the Board and it was ordered that his license to practice medicine in the state of Nevada be suspended until further order of the Board, he shall participate in a program to correct alcohol or drug dependence or any other impairment, he is ordered to enter Talbot Recovery campus for an evaluation and treatment and upon release from Talbot he is to enter into a contract with the Diversion Program for 5 years, he must petition the Board for restoration of his license, and he must pay the investigative costs to the Board. Copies; Stipulation for Settlement 4 pages, Order 3 pages ******************************************************************** SEPTEMBER 8, 2001 The Board lifted Dr. Handsfield's suspension and restored him to a restricted license to practice medicine in the state of Nevada. He is restricted to office practice and only certain surgical procedures until further order of the Board. Copies; Order 1 pages ******************************************************************** SEPTEMBER 7, 2002 Dr. Handsfield petitioned the board for removal of the restrictions placed on his license by the Board on September 7, 2002. The Board approved Dr. Handsfield's petition; however, the Board ordered that Dr. Handsfield's license remain restricted, with the restriction being that his first 25 patient cases shall be proctored by a physician practicing in the same field, licensed by the Board and pre-approved by the Secretary/Treasurer of the Board. Once he has successfully treated the 25 patients while being proctored, his license will be restored to full and unrestricted practice, as long as he complies with his contract with the board's Diversion Program. ******************************************************************** DECEMBER 7, 2002 Dr. Handsfield petitioned the Board for removal of the restrictions placed on his medical license by the Board on September 7, 2002. The Board approved to lift Dr. Handsfield's restrictions on his medical license and restored him to a full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in the state of Nevada. ******************************************************************** Formal Complaint January 6, 2009 The Investigative Committee of the Board of Medical Examiners of the State of Nevada filed its formal complaint against Rodney Handsfield, MD (Respondent), on, January 6, 2009 charging Respondent with engaging in conduct that is grounds to discipline pursuant to the Medical Practice Act (NRS Chapter 630), to wit: that the Respondent entered into a Consent Order with the Kansas Board of Healing Arts which imposed a fine upon Respondent and required Respondent to complete a course on professional boundaries and anger management which consititutes a violation of NRS 630.301(3). JL Complaint: 6 pages ********************************************************************* SETTLEMENT, WAIVER AND CONSENT AGREEMENT August 7, 2009 On August 7, 2009 a Settlement, Waiver and Consent Agreement was approved and accepted by the Nevada State Board of Medical Examiners (Board), whereby, Rodney Handsfield, MD (Respondent) violated NRS 630.301(3), in that the disciplinary action related to his license to practice medicine in the state of Kansas was a violation of NRS 630.301(3). As a result, the Respondent shall receive a Public Reprimand; shall pay a fine of $1000.00; has complied with all terms and conditions set forth by the Kansas Medical Board and its Consent Order; shall sign a release of information allowing the Board to communicate with the Kansas Medical Board; and reimburse the Board's costs and expenses incurred in the investigation and prosecution of the case against him, in the amount of $1713.61, payable within 60 days of the approval and acceptance of this Settlement Agreement.
